Here's how to prevent neck and back pain as a dentist or dental hygienist

Neck and back pain are common in the oral care industry. 30% of oral care professionals do not make it to retirement due to back pain. How do you sit healthily?

How do you make sure you no longer have to wriggle around in all sorts of corners? And how can you do your job with more pleasure and, above all, without pain? These are questions that you, as an oral care professional, may well be struggling with. Need answers? Read them here!

Good sitting posture

Sitting upright and active is the best sitting posture. This can be achieved by putting your chest forward, stretching your back and relaxing your shoulders. Finally, it is important that your feet are hip width apart on the floor and you do not cross your legs, no matter how comfortable it is.

Screen at eye level

Patient data is mainly processed on the computer. Because as an oral care professional you work a lot with monitors, it is important that the screen is at eye level and that the monitor is right in front of you so that you can keep your neck straight.

Better sitting with saddle chairs

Often, traditional work chairs only allow limited hip height. It is difficult to sit on a standard stool or chair without getting neck or back pain. You avoid this by choosing a saddle chair. The unique shape of the saddle and its adjustable height will tilt your pelvis and help you sit better. Because you sit with your legs turned to the side, you can better position your legs under the treatment chair. This allows you to sit closer to your patients and bend over less.

Work dynamically

Working in the same tense position for too long is not healthy. Therefore, make sure you regularly relax your muscles and get up to move. So regularly insert breaks, move around for a while and, for example, pick up your patients from the waiting room yourself.

Be active outside of work

It is important to take care of your health outside work. Regular sport and exercise strengthen your muscles. This makes it easier to adopt a good sitting posture during work and your muscles will recover more easily after strain.
