Adjust your office chair correctly in four steps

With a good office chair you can adjust the seat height, seat depth, the height of your backrest and armrests to your body. Do you want to give your back that extra bit of support during your work? We explain how you can get the best out of your chair in four steps by adjusting it the right way for your body.

Step 1: set your seat height correctly

A good working posture starts with the correct seat height. You can easily set this up by sitting up straight on your office chair and placing both feet flat on the floor. You can now adjust the seat of your office chair up or down until your legs are at a 90-degree angle. The lever for this can be found under your seat. The right height ensures that you maintain good blood circulation in your legs. Therefore, check whether your thigh and knee are slightly sloping, so that the hip is higher than your knee. Ideal seat height: check!

Step 2: set your seat depth

Can you adjust the seat depth of your chair? Then this is your next step. For people with long legs, a sliding seat can be pleasant, because the seat depth increases by approx. 6-10 cm. You can adjust this with the lever under the seat that makes it slide forward and backward. How do you know if you are sitting correctly? If your back connects well to the backrest of the chair and there is sufficient space between the seat and the back of your knees, you have the right seat depth. You can check the latter by making a fist and placing it between the front of the seat and the back of your knees. This space prevents constriction of the blood vessels.

Step 3: adjust the backrest

Do you have an office chair of which you can adjust your backrest in height? Then check whether it is adjusted to the height of your back. The backrest should come at least to your shoulders, so that it can fully support your back. If the backrest is not adjustable, you can check whether it fits well with the curve of your back. Some office chairs have an inflatable lumbar support in the backrest. If this is possible, you can adjust the curvature so that your back gets support in the right places. Step 4: last, but not least: the armrests

The desktop is often our mainstay on which our arms can regularly lean on. However, there is a good chance you sit too far forward, which can cause problems with your neck muscles. It's time to put those armrests to good use. To adjust the armrests to the correct height, first let your shoulders hang down relaxed, so you can place the arms at the correct 90-degree angle. This way your arms rest comfortably on the armrests. And there you go, all set for your working day behind the desk!
