A healthy sitting posture
Nowadays, we spend much of our lives sitting. Employees in the Netherlands even sit for an average of 10.7 hours a day! It is therefore not surprising that many people suffer from health problems and pain. To limit the problems, a healthy sitting posture is very important. We have listed the best tips for you!
Tips for a better posture
- Take an ergonomic chair
A good sitting posture starts with a good chair! So invest in an ergonomic stool or office chair. Make sure it is perfectly tailored to you, so that you support your back, neck and arms well. This can be done, for example, by choosing adjustable armrests and backrests. It is also important that you can reach the ground with your feet. You also want the pelvis to be slightly higher than the knees. so that you create an open hip angle. This supports the natural hollowing of the lower back.

- Work at a height-adjustable desk
Height-adjustable desks are ideal for setting up your ergonomic workplace. You can adjust them exactly to your height. Make sure the height of your desk is at elbow height. Place your computer monitor at eye level (the top of the screen should be at the same level as your eyes) and at arm's length away from you. When typing, keep your wrists straight. Use an ergonomic keyboard and mouse. This way you prevent annoying pain in your hand and wrist joints.
Another advantage of the adjustable desk: you can also work standing up. This brings us to the next point:
- Alternate between a seated and standing position
What's the best way to sit? By alternating between a seated and standing position! Yes, you can still adopt a good sitting posture, but it is still essential to move. This prevents cramping of the muscles and promotes blood circulation. Alternate between sitting and standing, make sure you stand for a while, walk a bit or stretch yourself well. To help you with this, you can opt for a sit-stand stool.
- Train your muscles
When you strengthen the muscles in your back and abdomen, it is easier to maintain your balance. This promotes a healthy sitting posture. So do regular exercises and train your back and abdominal muscles. Incidentally, it works both ways: with the right sitting posture you strengthen your muscles. Especially when your posture is active and you have to keep yourself balanced. You can do this on a saddle chair, for example. This ergonomic stool is not only comfortable, but also extra good for your core.
Care about your health
It is sometimes quite difficult to adopt a healthy sitting posture, but it is definitely worth it. Bad posture has a negative impact on your health. With the right tools and exercise, you can prevent unpleasant pain. In addition, you strengthen your muscles and stimulate blood circulation. Your concentration will also increase and you will feel less tired. So don't hesitate to invest in an ergonomic workplace, both for your comfort and your health.
